Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina known for its natural beauty, amazing history, stunning architecture, outstanding restaurants and friendly people. The downtown area sits just feet above sea level creating some amazing views.

Charleston was founded in 1670 as Charles Town, honoring King Charles II on the west bank of the Ashley River which is now Charles Towne Landing. There is no shortage of things to do in Charleston from museums to beaches to historic sites and tours to live theater to carriage tours to walking tours to the aquarium to baseball etc and etc. Basically anyone can find something to do in Charleston. 

While many think of Charleston as the downtown known as The Peninsula, you will even hear people say Charleston is where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers come together to form the Atlantic Ocean, Charleston is actually much bigger going from The Peninsula to West Ashley so it is a lot more than the 5 square miles that are the Peninsula.

Charleston is made up of 6 districts: 

Downtown, or sometimes referred to as "The Peninsula", is Charleston's center city separated by the Ashley River to the west and the Cooper River to the east.

West Ashley, residential area to the west of Downtown bordered by the Ashley River to the east and the Stono River to the west.

Johns Island, far western limits of Charleston home to the Angel Oak, bordered by the Stono River to the east, Kiawah River to the south and Wadmalaw Island to the west.

James Island, popular residential area between Downtown and the town of Folly Beach where the McLeod Plantation is located. A portion of James Island was incorporated into its own town in 2012.

Cainhoy Peninsula, far eastern limits of Charleston bordered by the Wando River to the west and Nowell Creek to the east.

Daniel Island, residential area to the north of downtown, east of the Cooper River and west of the Wando River.

The Peninsula has massive historic mansions that are some of the most expensive homes in the country while West Ashley has suburban neighborhoods some of which are largely made up of entry level homes.
